WHCA Medication Assistance Training Program Curriculum

Washington Health Care Association has developed a medication assistance training program, designed to be taught by your facility instructor in-house. This robust program has been approved by DSHS for 10 hours of continuing education and includes:

  • Pre-class study guide and test to prepare the future medication aide in understanding commonly used medication abbreviations and medical terms;
  • Student workbook to guide the future medication aide through the course, beginning with introductory information on medications, limitations to the medication assistant process, and step-by-step guides to assist with various types of medications;
  • Instructor guide that mimics the student workbook, and includes instructions on activities, answers to questions posed to students during the course, and highlights to emphasize during the teaching process;
  • PowerPoint presentation that supports the student workbook;
  • Medication pass demonstration checklist so the instructor can observe the future medication aide putting classroom knowledge into practice; and
  • Final exam that encompasses the fundamental aspects of the course.

Included in the packet, for ease of facility approval, is the Facility Training Application form to be submitted to DSHS, complete with the CE code for this course, as well as a short video introducing the instructor to the different documents and how to use them in teaching the course.
